Micropatronage

Do you know the Open and Closed Project? They are trying to do some research in the accessibility media, but the guy behind it is getting some tough times getting the project started for real.

What I need to get this thing going?
About $7 million Canadian over the life of the project. First-year startup costs are about $500,000. In the grand scheme of things, these are small figures. But raising even that pittance of money hasn’t been going very well thus far. With all the distractions involved in keeping a “consulting” business afloat, I have not had a solid block of time to devote to fundraising for the Project.

His solution? Micropatronage. He asks everyone who believes in his project to donate him whatever they want. Even five dollars will make the difference. He guarantees nothing (and he highlights it!) but he’s sure committed to work on this project. He’s raised $6.000 already thanks to this new way of raising funds.

Although this is a pretty innovative idea, I wonder if there are any support plans in Canada for this kind of projects…
